Strictly speaking as many as your land will take.  An alpaca eats about 70% of what a sheep will eat, but will eat about 150% while pregnant and feeding a cria.  If you have strong growing pasture you will be able to run 5-7 per acre.  As with any livestock be prepared for fluctuations in weather conditions and supplment as needed.
